Club History - 2004
2004 Gym Mark and the Sport England Club award.
The above awards were obtained, after much hard work, in December.
Appointment of Welfare Officers.
In May 2004 the club in line with its desire to achieve the Gym Mark appointed two Welfare Officers in Dawn Ellis and Jean Hallas.
Coaching provision.
The club had started with one coach, which was Dave Powell. With the various expansions to the club and the growth of the clubs membership the club can now boast ten qualified coaches and at present three helpers.
June 2004 Conception of Development squads.
The successful structure of the club with the infusion of the pre school members in to the recreational classes has meant that a number of potential competitive gymnasts have been identified. The creation of two development squads one for girls and one for boys meant that extended training could be offered to those concerned.
2004 Grant from SWAGA.
A grant from SWAGA enabled the club to purchase Pre School Kit, which could also be used for any courses that might be run. 2004 Grant from Cheltenham Borough Council. Another successful application for a grant enabled six safety modules to have the foam replaced.
Club History - 2003
2003 Grant Awarded.
A successful application to Cheltenham Borough Council for a grant meant that with club funds a New Vaulting Table could be purchased thus enabling all to experience the new vault. .
July 2003.
Agreement was reached with the school over the installation of the Asymmetric Bars and the High Bar and further storage for Beams and more mats. The club was now able to function on the girls' side in Four Piece training.
Club History - 2002
May 2002.
Negotiations regarding storage were conducted with the centre management and agreement reached that one of the storage cupboards could be used for some of the equipment. This enabled the floor mats, large safety mats and the tumble track to be stored. The club was able to focus on Floor, Vault, Trampette and Tumbling. Successes were achieved in Tumbling with gymnasts representing the South West at the National Finals in 2003.
April 2002
The recreational classes were reintroduced at Bournside Sports Centre on a Friday night. Many members did not rejoin as the location of the venue and the evening offered was not convenient.
February 2002.
Dave Powell head coach also ran a successful Circuit Training session at Bournside Sports Centre. The centre was approached as to the possibility of running a session for the Competition Gymnasts if only once a week. The Manager agreed and a simple training session was set up on a Saturday afternoon. The clubs equipment was still in storage elsewhere as Bournside at this time had no storage facilities available.
February 2002.
A change of Headmaster at Rowanfield Junior School meant a change in the fortunes of the club. The school governors brought in a rule that equipment, brought in for a class, had to be removed from the hall or room that was hired, after each session. The Club's equipment had been stored in the hall quite safely up till now. With the amount of equipment that the club now owned this was going to prove impractical and the club had to seek new premises. All classes at the school were suspended, which had a devastating effect on the club's membership.
January 2002.
This year saw a further expansion to the club's activities in the creation of a Pre School section. With the School not being available during the day meant that another venue had to be sought. SS Philip and James church was approached with a view to operating the classes out of the Church Centre. Agreement was reached and some Pre School equipment was purchased, Classes started at the end of the month. This section of the club provides an avenue into the infant recreational group on a Friday evening or even in to the development squads.
Club History - 1999
March 1999 Club expansion.
It was soon realised that the club had to move forward and develop its own member base for potential competitive gymnasts to be invited to join the small competition group. In March 1999 two recreational classes were started on a Monday evening. These classes were soon full a waiting list evolved. It did not take long before interest was shown by older participants and a senior recreational class was set on up on the same night.
January 1999 Purchase of equipment.
On retiring from Severn Trent the package included a lump sum, which had been invested. It was decided by the joint partners that some of this could be loaned to the club, interest free, thus enabling some much needed equipment to be purchased. By now five gymnasts had joined the club and to their delight in February 1999 they came to training to be confronted with training facilities on Asymmetric Bars, a Beam, a Vaulting Horse, a new Trampette and new matted floor area.
1999 - Clubs inception - Bristol help.
Talks with the Headmaster of Rowanfield Junior School proved very positive, as he was an enthusiast of gymnastics. The club was started on 5 January 1999. At the start only the small amount of school mats and a wooden vaulting box were available for training. Two gymnasts took the initial plunge to join the club and Rowan Gymnastics Club had arrived in Cheltenham. The Bristol School of Gymnastics, with the loan of a trampette and a springboard, gave help. This was most welcome and the clubs are still good friends.
Club History - 1998
1998 - Retirement from Severn Trent Water by Dave Powell.
Though this was achieved in July of 1998, it proved to be a positive event for the club.
1998 - encouragement from two parents.
Encouragement from two parents to move on and set up a gymnastics club brought about the ideas that have created Rowan Gymnastics Club.
